Novel Creation Process — Phase 4

Writing Phase

By Cody Leet

Time to get down to business and put pen to paper. Or fingers to keyboard.

☐ Write First Draft

The initial draft is about capturing ideas, not perfection. The key is to write. Keep the ideas flowing and don't get hung up on grammar and consistency. That's what editing is for. Just get it down.

☐ Write Second Draft

In your second pass, shift to an editorial perspective. Make your prose cleaner and more polished before sending it to a professional editor. The less wrong with it, the faster and cheaper that process will be.

Recommended tools for this pass:

  • Hemingway App — highlights complex sentences and passive voice
  • Grammarly — catches grammar, spelling, and style issues
